STRUCTURAL SOIL
LCA Award for Excellence in Landscape Construction
"Most Innovative New Product - 1999"

When Sydney won the right to host the Olympic Games in 2000, few of us imagined the technological advances that hosting such an event would generate. Homebush Bay, with its focus on re-development, the environment, and importantly, the legacy for the future, has provided companies such as ours the opportunity to showcase cutting-edge technology.

Based on the intention to do things right the first time, a multi-disciplined team was assembled to address the problems of growing mature trees in pavements. It was this team that developed the concept of Structural Soil. We at BENEDICT Sand & Gravel played a role in the development of Structural Soil by advising the team of the natural materials available throughout Sydney with technical input on the properties of each.

We supplied the samples for the development and laboratory testing phase and most importantly, kept the team on track with costing issues - whilst quality was paramount there was no point in developing a product that no-one would use because the cost was prohibitive.

It is pleasing to note that Structural Soil has now moved well beyond the Olympic precinct and we are constantly receiving inquiry from Councils and Landscape Architects requesting information. We have or are currently supplying 15 separate projects throughout Sydney with Structural Soil.

We have now established ourselves as the leaders in engineered soil mix technology. We have worked with the original team on developing the concept and supplied all the material into the Olympic projects.

Furthermore, we have now broadened the concept to include other structural applications such as turfed overflow parking areas and raising the soil level around existing mature trees.

So, what is Structural Soil? Conventional road base materials are poor medium for growing trees. Conversely, conventional soil mixes are poor road bases. Structural Soil attempts to provide the best of both materials - good structural support for pavements and a hospitable growing environment for tree roots.
