"The Curran Foundation is so appreciative of the corporate support of Benedict Industries. It is from such support financially that we can provide St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney with significant annual grants from state of the art diagnostic and treatment equipment to providing patient comforts, such as air mattresses, televisions to beds and access to telephones.

In 2007, St Vincent’s Hospital is celebrating 150 years of charity, care and compassion. Founded by the Sisters of Charity, St Vincent’s Hospital opened in 1857 guided by the mission to provide health care to those in need, in particular the poor and disadvantaged.

Today, the Hospital is one of Australia’s leading tertiary, research and acute care hospitals, with a world-renowned reputation in cardiac care, HIV/AIDS, lung and bone marrow transplantation, cancer treatment and mental health.

St Vincent’s Hospital now forms part of St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney (SV&MHS) and is co-located on the Darlinghurst Campus with the Sacred Heart Hospice, St Vincent’s Private Hospital and St Vincent’s Clinic. Also housed on the Campus are the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Unit and the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology & Clinical Research, all of which are affiliated with St Vincent’s Hospital and strengthen its world-class reputation.

Under the leadership of the Sisters of Charity, St Vincent’s Hospital has become one of Australia’s leading public hospitals and a principal referral hospital. It is recognised as a centre for excellence in clinical care, research and training. During its 150-year history, the Hospital has played a pioneering role in the provision of health care services and medical advancement at both a national and international level.

St Vincent’s Hospital has 326 beds and in the year 2005/06 there were over 36,000 inpatient admissions with over 500,000 non-inpatient visits to our other community health services including alcohol & drug services, mental health services and our emergency facilities.

Again thank you for the generosity of Benedict Industries and the Ronald Smith family for the continuing financial support to St Vincent’s through the Curran Foundation.

Sincerely,

Trish Burns AM
